The Columbian Exchange The Columbian Exchange was the transfer of plants, animals, human populations, diseases, cultures, and ideas throughout the world. The new worlds that had been discovered were a part of this Columbian Exchange, and were exposed to many new and foreign goods as well as people. The Americas, or New World, were faced with harsh treatment from Columbus and his crew, along with the rampant spread of new diseases that took a large toll on the Native populations. The Indies were also subject to these same factors. So, was the Columbian exchange an overall positive event for the Americas? While not justifying the cruelty of the Portuguese and Spaniards towards the Native Americans and Indians, the belief that the Columbian†¦show more content†¦Both of these accounts of the events happening in the New world came from the Priest Bartolome de las Casas, who reported back to the king and queen of Spain. One more document that describes the extent of Columbus’ wrongdoings is that of Dinesh D’Souza in â€Å"The Crimes of Christopher Columbus† . D’Souza writes that â€Å" Undoubtedly the Indians perished in great numbers.† (Doc 6). These sources could have possible biases in the fact that some of these sources were not actually present at these historical events, and some were figures who may exaggerate to put an end to anything they saw unjust. A second group that the documents can be divided into is of those which revealed the effects of the Columbian Exchange to be negative. Since Columbus did discover new land, he should be considered a hero, yet he should not be for his crimes committed upon the Natives, and neither should the Spaniards. Christopher Columbus describes his first encounter with the Native Americans and writes that â€Å" They would make fine servants†¦ With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.† ( Doc 1). The types of marriages or living situations has been continuing to grow. There are arranged marriages, consenting marriages, polygamy, cohabitation, breadwinner/homemaker model. Arranged marriages were talked about above. These marriages are one sin which the parents have total control over the children. They pick and choose who will marry their children without the child’s consent. They were done for wealthy, politics, alliances, and kinship. Consenting marriages were not something that came easy. These only came about after the church stepped into a government position. Consent was as easy as saying the two were together. Eventually this became too controversial and laws were implanted to make the laws stronger about marriage. In order for a marriage to be seen as valid, a woman had to have a dowry, banns need to be posted, and they weddings should take place in front of witnesses. Later on, the dowry was replaced with the man taking the woman out for dinner or a movie. The man was supposed to pay. Today, there is no exchange of money between families and the party is by invitation only. It is more a private matter and a celebration based on choice. In this essay, I will convey my views on Freud’s credibility and his failed claims of the Oedipus and Electra complexes, as well as his achievement in fathering the Psychological and Psychotherapeutic theories of Psychoanalysis. This is the commonest question that English teachers raise. Most teachers try to be the best in their classrooms, but they even don’t know how. In my opinion, when learners think about an issue critically and have some ideas from different aspects to solve the problems, they understand the idea better, Thus, collaboration and interaction motivate the students; the motivated student has no time to devote to do other unrelated things in the classroom. Therefore, they can work in groups and have explanation or prediction and make sense of current experience. However, we can’t deny the role of conditioning and repetition in learning another language. According to elements of observational learning students pay attention by marking and highlighting and as they memorize the knowledge they can remember it easily. â€Å"when individuals are learning a new behavior, they will learn it faster if they are reinforced correct response.† (Woolfolk, A, 2016). Reinforcement plays a really essential role in learning. When the teacher commends the students systematically they have more positive reactions toward their learning. As a teacher who works in ministry of education, I think behaviorism is more dominant at Iranian school. Students and their inner abilities, intelligence – according to multiple intelligence theory by Gardner – are ignored. The higher level the students are the less creativity and critical views they have. The cultural and social learning (authenticity) are ignored as well. Moreover, group working and collaborating play little role in Iranian schools. Students are not able to predict and organize their knowledge. As they are fed by the teacher they can’t use the knowledge they know to understand the subject that they don’t know. The focus is most on the operant conditioning and students are likely to memorize the knowledge rather than understand the point. The testing tools also are not that professional in order to evaluate students who are learning through constructivism and cognitivism. The materials which have been covered in the books are not powerful enough to juice up the students discovering abilities and help them to build their own knowledge. In conclusion, as I mentioned before none is superior to another. We have to recognize the advantages of each and use them appropriately. Communication within groups Essay There are many different kinds of groups that exist between college students that deal with communication they range from sports teams to many community or social groups. The type of organizations that are mostly found in many colleges today are Greek letter organizations. In this paper I will exploring communication within the realm of sororities. First, I am going to start with the history of Sororities, then I am going to write about how important it communication is during what sororities call the pledge process. Furthermore I am going to tell about the different things that sororities have, such as the symbols, colors and different things that may deal with communication. Even though all sororities have different representations for their symbols and colors, they all have them and they mean certain things. Before sororities came about they only had fraternities which dated back the colonial times then later in the mid 19th century sororities came about due to the decrease in popularity (Encarta). During that period, colleges focused almost exclusively on teaching the classics (Greek and Latin literature) and promoting religious piety, rather than liberal arts (science, history, and literature) or applications of learning such as engineering and agriculture. In response, students created their own outlets to debate the intellectual and political ideas of their time. The early debating societies took on names that reflected classical thinkers or ideas( Encarta). Until the 20th century, most fraternities and sororities excluded African American students. The movement to create organizations for African American students began in 1906 with the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at Cornell University. Two years later, the first sorority for African American women, Alpha Kappa Alpha, was established at Howard University. Members of African American Greek-letter organizations sought to help other black students develop to their full potential in a mutually supportive atmosphere. Historically, the founding principles of African American Greek organizations included service to their community, academic achievement, and creation of cultural and social outlets for students (Encarta). There are different types of sororities. There are four basic types of Greek letter organizations: social, professional, academic or honorary, and service. Of these, social Greek-letter organizations are most popular (Encarta). The first social sorority started in 1851 by women at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. The women founded the Adelphean Society, which later became a Greek-letter sorority, Alpha Delta Pi. Other early Greek-letter sororities for women included Pi Beta Phi, established in 1867 at Monmouth College, in Monmouth, Illinois, and Kappa Alpha Theta, established in 1870 at DePauw University (formally Indiana Asbury College) in Greencastle, Indiana (Encarta). Social sororities contribute to the social development of members through organized social events and service projects. Many chapters maintain houses on or near the campus where members can meet and hold social functions. Social sororities are known for their parties, dances, and other social activities (Encarta) . Many sororities encourage those interested ladies to go out and get to know people , and members of the sorority itself. Given the minimum requirement that pledges be academically capable of maintaining membership, the organizations that selected them are likely to pay attention to two kinds of qualities in a potential member. First there are those that will suit them to general function of acquiring and maintaining friends, and interest in other people, skill in relating to them, and perhaps the most important, an orientation toward group life, which will dispose them to establish and maintain friendship within the house (Scott 92).
